How Sleeping Cleans The Brain

A fluid called “trash”, which includes proteins that causes Alzheimer’s disease, builds up during the awake times, and drains while the subject is asleep. Well, this is at least true in mice.

                                                                              sleepingbrain

This discovery may finally explain why sleep seems mandatory for every animal, and why humans cannot deal without having sleep for only a handful of days. It may also shed new light on the causes of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

During research on the mice in 2014, researchers studied the flow of fluids in the brains of sleeping and awake mice. The main focus was on the flow within the Glymphatic system, which are the spaces between brain cells. The Glymphatic system acts much like a sewer, helping to clear out the waste products that brain cells generate during regular tasks.

A very interesting discovery was that the interstitial spaces in the brains of sleeping or anesthetized mice were 60 percent larger than those of the brains of mice that are awake. The interstitial space normally takes up 14 percent of the volume of the brain of awake mice, but when the brain is sleeping or anesthetized it makes up 23 percent of the brains of mice. These changes make the brains of sleeping mice better equipped to remove its trash.

Also, shockingly, the researchers found that the cells in the brain shrink by 60 percent during sleep. The cells shrinking left more room for the fluid to drain through the interstitial spaces. It was also noted that the brains of the mice had less noradrenaline. Noradrenaline is a chemical that the brain releases when the brain needs to become alert, often in response to threats. Furthermore, it was speculated that noradrenaline might help control how brain cells expand and contract during sleep and waking.

There is also a discovery that explains why larger animals sleep less than smaller animals. However, more research is currently needed to find prove this link.

Exploding Head Syndrome Sleep Disorder

Do you hear an exploding sound in the middle of the night and end up waking up? It is called the exploding head syndrome, which is a sleep disorder. It is, however, not as serious as it sounds.

                                                                 head

It is a rare and a little understood sleep disorder, which makes you wake up in the middle of a deep sleep when you hear exploding sounds or thunderclaps. The sounds can be terrifying and make you feel as if someone has broken into your home.

The symptoms of exploding head syndrome

The symptoms of exploding head syndrome can vary from one person to another. There is, however, very little physical pain in the person suffering from this condition. Sometimes, the person experiences absolutely no pain associated with this condition as per the American Sleep Association (ASA). Many people have reported to seeing flashes of light with the loud sounds that they hear in the middle of the night. Shortness of breath, anxiety, and even an increased heart rate are common in a person with this condition.

Daytime sleepiness can also be the result of this problem. Some people become naturally anxious when they are unable to sleep properly at night.

Stress and exploding head syndrome

While some people can hear the sounds in both ears, some can hear it only in one ear. In some cases, the sounds seem to emanate from the patient’s head. Some people find that the syndrome occurs only in people, who are dealing with high levels of stress. It affects both men as well as women, even though the condition is more common in women and people that are 50 years of age or older.

Nobody is sure what causes the exploding head syndrome since very little research has been done on this condition. Some researchers have come to the conclusion that it is related to the seizures in the temporal lobe of the brain. Others suggest that it might be related to hearing disorders.

Hypnagogic jerk

This is one of the conditions, which has been described as occurring in the transitional stage between sleepiness and full wakefulness or a hypnagogic condition. It is said to occur as a result of a sudden reaction or an involuntary muscle spasm that occurs while a person is drifting off to sleep.

Researchers are not entirely sure why the jerking reactions occur in a person. Some people report the reactions being followed by hallucinations, dreams, and illusions. However, researchers are trying to find out why these reactions occur. One of the theories says that these are the natural reactions of the body while a person is trying to transition into a sleepy state from a wakeful state and happen due to the misfiring of the nerves.

Is there a cure for this problem?

Yoga or meditation can help cure this condition. Even taking a hot shower or a hot bath before going to sleep can help the person suffering from this condition relax. Doctors have, however, reported that this condition could be due to the intake of certain medications or drugs.
